Club Round Results – August

Due to the lack of contestable surf, the August club round was cancelled. It looked like we might get some good waves in the lead up to it, with the large swell that hit late on Thursday, but those unseasonably early nor-easters made sure it was a real mess!

It was lovely to see everyone’s happy faces on Sunday morning and great to be able to have a goodbye catch up with Silja before she left back to Germany. It’s been great having you here and your enthusiasm will be missed!

July Club Round Results – Hardcore Classic Prize Round

What a month! I’d first like to take the opportunity to thank the amazing community we are a part of. The ongoing support from them has been amazing with so many local businesses contributing great prizes and vouchers for our members. Please support our local business as it is them who supports us!
Big thank you to Lennox Surf, Lennox Pizza and Pasta, The Station Grocer, Seagrass Greengrocer, Club Lennox, The Lennox Hotel, Terry White Pharmacy Lennox Head, Cellarbrations, Hollywood Surf Supply, The LAC, LeChelle boutique, Rare Handmade, Karen Howes, Tamika Hudson Makeup Artist, BodSquad by Rikki Lee, Riley Burnett, and Kerene Bienke Personal Training. Without you guys, we wouldn’t be able to do what we do every month, and we certainly wouldn’t be nearly at the 30 year mark!

The July club round was held in beautiful winter conditions at Lennox beach. The offshore winds helped make for fun waves on the inside and some heavier sets breaking on the outside bank. The girls in the Opens and Wahine Masters were charging! Due to the tide changes a few heats had to be moved around so that everyone was able to surf in safe conditions. Thank you to everyone for your understanding!   Another great club round, looking forward to seeing you at our August club round! Sign on at 7am sharp.

NAME: Lindsay Vaughan

AGE: 34 BORN: Las Vegas Nevada

LIVES: Ballina NSW

OCCUPATION: Owner and Coach of the gym Cross Fit in Ballina.

DIVISION  : Senior Beginner

WHAT MADE YOU START SURFING? I used to have a huge fear of open water and I used to walk out on the Ballina break wall and watch the people surfing and just think how fun it looked. I wanted so badly to learn how to surf but I was so terrified to get in the water. I told my friend Kerene I wanted to learn and there was no way she was going to let me live any longer without giving it a try. She took me to little beach breaks and pushed me into waves next to her 9 year old son and helped me find the courage to get in the water on my own.

WHO ARE YOUR SURFING IDOLS? Kerene Bienke and Amy Fortescue Both are just friends that took the time to help me learn, get me fitted in a wetsuit, give me books about surfing, and teach me the technical terms. They are also great surfers 🙂

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAVE? Probably Missingham bridge but really anywhere there is a clean small wave.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM SURFING SCENARIO?  Warm sun, warm crystal blue water, friends to go with, small clean wave that is good for learning, plenty of sun cream, only a few people in the water to share the waves with, no time constraints to think about, plenty of snacks waiting for me on the beach.

WHAT ARE YOUR OTHER HOBBIES AND INTERESTS? I compete in CrossFit and really enjoy spending time with friends.

WHAT ARE YOUR SURFING GOALS FOR 2019? I want to build my courage in the water. I get nervous of paddling in to bigger waves. I would also like to get better at paddling in to the wave at an angle and going across the wave.

“SURFING MAKES ME FEEL…”  Excited, brave, exhausted and fulfilled.

June Club Round Results

The June club round was held in rather icy conditions at Lennox beach. The cold offshore winds helped make for not bad conditions with some heavier sets breaking on the outside bank and some fun littler ones on the inside. Lucky the water was warm at 22 degrees and the company was fun. The junior beginners really pushed themselves to catch some great unaided waves without the support of the club coaches! Another great club round, looking forward to our winter hardcore classic prize round!

Ma Bendall-Phyllis O’Donnell Memorial Inter Club Tag Team Shield Event 2019

The Ma Bendall-Phyllis O’Donnell Memorial Tag Team Shield-Interclub Challenge was held on the June Long weekend in dreamy conditions. This memorial shield was created to honour the contribution to Australian women’s surfing by these two pioneering women surfers. It is an event that celebrates women’s surfing and promotes comradery. The first interclub event held to compete for the shield was held in 1986 on the Sunshine Coast. It was not until 1996 that the contest was held again, and from that year until 2007 it was contested by Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and Lennox All Girls Surfriders. Due to the demise of the women’s clubs on the Sunshine Coast and the Gold Coast, the shield was not officially contested again until 2013 when Mid Coast Girls Surfriders and Tweed Coast Surfer Girls Clubs travelled to Lennox Head to compete, with the event being contested via the current Tag Team format. This year the Mid North Coast girls made the drive up with two teams to compete. The weekend began with an awesome movie night at the local rugby club, to raise funds for our local Westpac helicopter crew, it was pretty special watching women’s surf movies with a bunch girls, big thanks to all those that attended the event. We awoke to absolutely perfect conditions on competition day, winds were offshore, sun was shining and waves were 3 ft with the odd bigger set coming in. Congratulations must go out to all of our girls, and the girls from the Mid North Coast Club! There was some amazing surfing from both teams and the most incredible sportsmanship. Special mention to Tamika Hudson for the highest scoring wave of the day, a 9.2. bomb from the outer bank! And to our junior girls Josie Morison and Layla Ross who paddled our with the biggest grins and did our teams proud. Also to the amazing Poppy Hand, who surfed every round as our junior open surfer. A big thanks to Mel Mott organising this year’s event and thanks also to the head judge Jenny Steen for making the trip down from the gold coast, it was great to catch up again. Thanks also to all those involved in making the day run smoothly and to the parents and supporters that came down and watched the event and to all those that helped with the set up and pack down. I am pleased to report that all the All Girls Surfriders club has managed to maintain its winning streak for another year and the shield is on display at Club Lennox. We look forward to doing it all again next year!!

Thanks again to all those who made the weekend a great event – especially Mel – and the girls who gave up their time to volunteer as officials – Kerry, Georgia, Maz, Jane and Melissa.
The Saturday night was a cracker with us raising a couple of hundred dollars for the Westpac Lifesaver Helicopter while watching movies about girls surfing in a room full of girls – does life get any better? Special thanks to Rae, Debbie Gordon, Mali and Kellie for their ultra-efforts helping the presidents clean up after – the facebook videos speak for themselves!

I have always loved the ocean and surfing seemed like fun.

Tyler Wright & Stephanie Gilmore

I just like the local spots.

Perfect peeling waves off a remote tropical island. All my friends are there and the water is crystal clear. Its surrounded by a beautiful coral reef and dolphins surf the wave with you.

I play netball and enjoy long distance running.

Perfecting turns and improving my technique would be my goals for 2019

SURFING MAKES ME FEEL… So happy and I love it so much.

May Club Round Results – 2019

Our May club round and annual camp out was held at Evans Head. The club round was moved to Chinaman’s Beach in Dirrawong National park and we were met with beautiful clean conditions with dolphins, whales and kangaroos popping in to say hello. The wahine masters and Opens surfed the outer banks for some Epic rides and even a few barrels and the intermediates and beginners got some of the rides of their lives.

BORN: Germany 15 .01 .45

LIVES:  Byron Bay

Which  DIVISON do you surf in :   beginners

WHAT MADE YOU START SURFING? I always admired people having fun  in the water. I grew up in the country and never learned to swim. I only learned to jump  in the pool  with out holding my nose at the age of 60.
When we moved to Byron to a house with a pool  my granddaughter helped and taught me to swim. I started surfing as a barter with my surfing friend in exchange for gym and massage sessions as i am a retired masseuse and gym instructor.  At that time i had a serious fear of water, so it was an enormous challenge for me. I only started to surf at age 70!

WHO ARE YOUR SURFING IDOLS?   Serena Adams and Laine Beachly

The Pass Byron Bay

Omg every time I go out in the water is magical and if I catch a ride standing up I am so happy. I drive my family crazy reliving the moment . Surfing in Hawaii is my next big adventure in August this year.

My hobbies  are tennis ,gym ,walking and dancing.

WHAT ARE YOUR SURFING GOALS  my goal is to stay fit and keep having fun while trying to catch a few waves

Alive ….its such an amazing feeling I have found it difficult to explain the feeling you get when you’ve  had a good surf. Only other surfers understand, non surfers don’t get it and its it’s useless  trying to explain it.

Most of my friends play bowls  or golf and they love it but for me to be out there on a beautiful day sitting on my board is Mecca.
