End of Year Presentation 2019

Presidents note, 2019 presentation –

There is something so inspirational about being in a room full of women and girls who all share the same passion and vision….

Surfing is to everyone here is not just the ocean, the beach, riding waves, but it means something a little different to each and every one of us …..it can be about community, a sense of belonging, connection, with ourselves and others, it is Authenticity, the ocean is a place where you get to be your true authentic self, it can be about movement, motivation to get out of bed in the morning, it can be about competition, to strive to be the best you can or it can simply be about fun and laughter, spending time with good friends, it can be about just getting you through the day, being good for your mental health, we always feel better after getting out of the ocean ….. it is nature at its most raw and beautiful, it is inspiration, just look around this room, stop and listen to the different stories of the people present today, you will find inspiration everywhere…….

Whatever surfing means for you, this is a day to honor and celebrate it, to share the stoke and to come together, to say thank you for another year of being part of this awesome club, of friendships, fun and learning.

I am grateful to have spent another year with you all and want to thank each and everyone of you for your love and support and laughter throughout another amazing year.

Club Round Results – October 2019

Originally Sept club round was postponed due to incontestable conditions, but luckily we had the 5th Sunday to have our round. We were met with small but clean waves in front of the bus shelter- made all the better by the sunshine. There was some great rides, especially from the beginners who really pushed themselves. It was unfortunately messy by the time the finals rolled around, but the girls really made the most of it to get some great waves. The day ran really smoothly thanks to all those who helped out, with a special mention to Cory, our exceptional tallier, Lindzi on the flags and of course time, our wonderful drone pilot volunteer, Tim.
Thanks girls and see you next round.

Bonny Hills Surf Trip 2019

BONNY HILLS SURF TRIP Friday/Sat 12th-13th October 2019
All Girls Surfriders were very well represented this year, with 11 current and former members; Mel, Maz, Kerry, Jan, Carol, Caz, Liz, Trish, Ebony, Marika and Marg all enjoying a fun weekend and challenging surf.
We almost filled the over 55 longboard division with Maz, Mel, Jan, Liz, Caz, Carol and Marg all competing. Mel took out 1st place closely followed by Maz 2nd. Liz and Jan made the final as well.
Mel usually only surfs her SUP, but can get on a longboard and absolutely rip. Maz shows us what one can achieve by surfing every day in all conditions. Well done girls!
Trish Giltinan (ex president) 5th in the mini-mal Final over18 ( just a wee bit over)
Ebony came 5th in open shortboard in a hotly contested field.
The waves and paddle out were very challenging, so well done to all competitors.
Check out Ebony’s pics of Mel and Maz on AG website.
The Saturday night entertainment was up to the usual All Girls standard with a hula dancing/singing performance to “Pearly Shells” accompanied by Kerry, Maz, Ebony and Marika on the ukuleles. Lots of laughter, with some very serious hula dancing by Jan and Liz.
Some of us have been travelling to this contest for 10 years and it really is a wonderful bonding weekend. We share a house and all have a great time.  All are welcome and there are divisions for all ages and levels.
Congratultions to the MNCGS – they put on an amazing contest and are so welcoming and nurturing of all the contestants…”it’s not always about winning” and everyone gets to surf at least twice.
I (Marg) have to say that All Girls has been (and is) the most amazing club.  All the friends I have now have come through surfing and the club.
So together we’ll keep the spirit of All Girls and the joy of surfing alive for many years to come.

Club Round Results – September

After one cancelled club round and this months round postponed from last weekend to this weekend due to incontestable conditions we were finally able to meet today blessed with early South winds, a rarity for this time of year.

Whilst the swell was a small 1-2 feet and the wave selection slim, it was nice to get most of the surfing done in the clean conditions before the Northerly puffed its menace around lunchtime.

The younger girls kept the members entertained and inspired throughout the morning with some skilful and inventive free surfing on the club foam boards. Way to go girls!

Next meet is Sunday October 27th. See you then.

Member of the Month – August

This months member of the month is Kellie O’Brien who is one of the founding members of our All Girls Club!!!
The All Girls Surfriders Club was born in 1991 at Lennox Head and was set up as a Regional Club. Max Perrot, Keryn Noach and Kellie O’Brien ran the ‘Have a Go Day’ which attracted many women and girls of various ages. They then established the Club and Australia’s leading contest , the All Girls Surf Showdown, to showcase amazing Women Surfing.
In 1994 they were nominated for the Prime Ministerial Women In Sport Awards for the strategic thinking behind the club and it’s efforts.
Kellie explains “I like to remember that many of the sports coordinators refused to believe that Girls really wanted to surf and shred and found it amazing that our Club was so cutting edge. It has been great to see the Coaching that we developed, the 20 Year Contest, the judging excellence that was reached in my life, the love of competition sport which has not been overcome by the importance of valued friendships and most importantly the beautiful life that we can live with the Sea. It has been a beautiful vision to realise and see so many girls and women find new skills in the washer and surfing that weren’t on our radar in women’s culture. I love the Club and am so stoked to see such great girls welcoming each other and encouraging each other and inspiring each other – Great leadership !!”

NAME: Kellie O’Brien

AGE: born in 1966

BORN: in Western Australia

LIVES: Lennox Head

OCCUPATION: Foster care Case worker

SURFS IN:  the Wahine Masters

WHAT MADE YOU START SURFING? I started at 23 and I really wanted to stand up.  I already spent a long time loving the beach and watching a lot but was pretty scared of the power of the sea.  I was supported to learn and find my own love of it and I really appreciate that.

WHO ARE YOUR SURFING IDOLS?  Jodie Cooper and Bev Simmons  who both have fabulous personalities and their own amazing relationships with the waves.  I love them because they were very generous with their sharing of their lives and learning about the ocean.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE WAVE?  All waves are wonderful but how can you not love warm delicious clean perfection of the Far North Coast.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM SURFING SCENARIO?   I have already lived my dreams but if I was transported I’d probably just travel on a beautiful boat and float around to waves and beaches wherever I wanted where people got along and life was a lot of fun.

WHAT ARE YOUR SURFING GOALS FOR 2019.  Just go to the Club rounds and stay in touch with the sea.  I do have  a sick board so it’s not hard to love every surf.

OTHER HOBBIES AND/OR INTERESTS:  I love community development and along with being a founder of the All Girls Surfriders Club I am a founder and Secretary/Public officer of Lennox Arts Board inc.  I like to relax, learn stuff, socialise and dance for fun, be a part of the world.

“SURFING MAKES ME FEEL” … in touch with life.
